Range: Pacific Ocean, Alaska to Baja California
While not nearly as common and populous as the more infamous Pacific purple sea urchin (especially south of Canada), red sea urchins can also be found in low rocky intertidal zones and kelp forests of the Eastern Pacific. These urchins are quite large, with their tests growing as large as seven inches in diameter. Their impressive size and the sweeter flavor of their gonads make red sea urchins a popular export to Japan as uni.
